「Following brings gain — steadfastness here is dangerous — sincerity on the right path clears all blame」
📜 Classical Text
Nine in the fourth: Following brings gain, but steadfastness here leads to misfortune; with sincerity on the right path and clear judgment, what blame is there?. Image: Following brings gain — its meaning still points to danger; sincerity on the right path — this is the work of clear judgment.
💡 Today's Wisdom
*Suí yǒu huò* — following and gaining from it. The line opens with what looks like a good outcome, then immediately pulls the rug: *zhēn xiōng*, steadfast pursuit of that gain leads to misfortune. The warning is precise. When things are going well because you aligned with the right current, the temptation is to stop thinking and just keep riding it. The gain itself becomes the trap — it breeds attachment, then complacency, then the slow erosion of independent judgment. This is a familiar arc in any career. Someone joins the right team, gets behind the right leader, and the results come easily. After a while they stop asking whether decisions are actually sound and start asking only whether the boss will approve. The wins keep coming for a time, but the person doing the work has quietly hollowed out. The line's correction is *yǒu fú zài dào, yǐ míng* — hold to genuine integrity, stay on the right path, and keep your judgment clear. The *Xiàng* commentary names this *míng gōng yě*: the real work here is clarity, the active effort to stay lucid while things are going your way. Following a strong current is not the mistake. Losing your own eyes while doing it is.
🎯 Action Advice
Think of one recent win that came from riding the right situation. Ask whether it actually reflects your own judgment — if not, write down one standard that is yours alone.
🔍 Today's Blind Spot
Gaining advantage by following others is exactly when complacency sets in, and compliance gets rebranded as pragmatism. Watch for this: attaching yourself to whoever holds power while abandoning independent judgment may pay off short-term, but the cost compounds over time. Sincerity on the right path is the only real protection Following offers.
⚠️ Peak Leads to Decline
Going with the flow is good, but beware of peaking too soon. Stay humble and don't lose yourself in momentary success.
