A yielding line in the ruler's position, it does not command through force but through *fú*, genuine trustworthiness. The *Xiàng* commentary adds two sharp observations: *xìn yǐ fā zhì* — sincerity activates others' motivation — and *yì ér wú bèi* — too much ease without principle, and people stop taking you seriously. Both halves are necessary. Modern team leadership makes this tension visible. A manager who only keeps the peace — never pushing back, always accommodating — gradually loses the team's sense of direction; boundaries blur, standards drift.
