The Judgment says, “The Family. Constancy of the woman is beneficial.” The Tuan Commentary expands: “In The Family, the woman has her correct place within, and the man has his correct place without. When man and woman are correctly placed, this is the great principle of heaven and earth. In the family there is a stern ruler: this means the father and mother. When the father is truly father, the son truly son, the elder brother truly elder brother, the younger brother truly younger brother, the husband truly husband, and the wife truly wife, then the way of the family is correct; when the family is set in order, all under heaven is settled.” The essential point is not hierarchy for its own sake, but correctness of role. A family is not defined merely by living together, but by mutual responsibility and moral coherence. “Beneficial for the woman’s constancy” highlights the importance of the inner foundation: continuity, care, restraint, and faithful order. The hexagram teaches that governance begins in intimate relations. If people neglect role, duty, and reverence, even material comfort cannot secure peace.
